What is a Maternal and Fetal Medicine Specialist?
A Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist (MFM) is a doctor who already holds an obstetrician degree and then goes through further specialist training which involves at least 3 further years of extensive training in high-risk pregnancies as well as tertiary level ultrasound. Only a select few obstetricians in Australia hold this qualification.
Maternal Fetal Medicine doctors look after both low risk and high-risk pregnancies. We are experts in all aspects of both low risk but more importantly high risk maternal and fetal complications like growth restriction, amniotic fluid problems, fetal anomalies and multiple pregnancies. We also help with all kinds of medical conditions in pregnancy including problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, preeclampsia, thyroid problems etc.
We are that doctors that other obstetricians refer to for advice or transfer of care when a pregnancy may become complicated. Although you may begin as a low-risk pregnancy, having a doctor with MFM qualifications care for you during a pregnancy will give you reassurance just in case things do not go as planned.
We are also experts in providing tertiary (highest level) and high-quality ultrasound for your pregnancy. This means you can rest assured that if your baby develops any complications, it will be detected early and managed efficiently.
